Yes, you can take a Tesla or any EV through a car wash.

Two things matter put the car in wash or free-roll mode so it doesn’t fight the conveyor, and go touchless where you can, to keep brushes off the cameras and sensors.

The battery itself is sealed and waterproof, so wet electronics aren’t really the concern.

The real risk is mechanical, not electrical. A car that isn’t in neutral can resist the belt, and a charge-port door can pop open under the spray. Both are easy to avoid.

The friction comes from features that fight a wash regenerative braking, one-pedal driving, and auto-hold all try to keep the car planted, which is the opposite of what a conveyor needs.

Turning those off for the wash is the whole job.

Car Wash Mode and Why It Exists

Car Wash Mode is a single toggle that shuts off every automatic behavior a wash would otherwise trigger. It exists because EVs do far more on their own than a gas car, and a wash triggers most of it.

Left in normal mode, an EV can trigger its wipers, pop the charge port, chirp parking sensors, and lock its doors as brushes and water hit it.

One mode disables all of that at once, which is far more reliable than remembering six separate settings at the wash entrance.

Not every EV has it.

Tesla, Rivian, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz are among the automakers that offer it the Chevrolet Bolt and Rivian’s earlier trucks, for example, only let you shift into neutral without the full one-tap package.

On Tesla, it’s found in the touchscreen under Controls, then Service, then Car Wash Mode, and it automatically turns off once the car exceeds 9 mph, so there’s no need to remember to switch it back afterward.

Tesla’s Car Wash Mode closes all windows, locks the charge port, and disables the wipers, Sentry Mode, walk-away locking, and parking sensor chimes.

You enable it from Controls, then Service, then Car Wash Mode, with the car stopped and not charging.

So can you take a Tesla through a car wash the same way you would a gas car. Almost, but this mode is the step you can’t skip.

For a conveyor wash, tap Enable Free Roll to hold the car in Neutral for the wash, which per Tesla’s own owner documentation also stops it from applying the parking brake if you leave the seat.

The mode switches off on its own above 9 mph or when you tap Exit. One detail Tesla states plainly car-wash damage isn’t covered by warranty, so skipping the mode is on you.

Other EVs and Neutral Mode

Not every EV bundles a one-tap Car Wash Mode, so check how your model reaches free-rolling neutral before you’re in line. The trap on many is a feature that keeps the car from moving.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E, for example, uses Temporary Neutral Mode, which per Ford’s own support guidance keeps it in neutral after you stop or step out.

Touchless is the safer pick for an EV, mostly to keep spinning brushes off camera housings and paint.

Tesla’s own guidance leans this way for automatic washes.

A third option, in-bay automatic, keeps the car stationary while brushes or cloth strips move around it since the car never moves, there’s no conveyor drag to worry about, though the same brush-contact caution still applies.

My arguable take is that the touchless preference has little to do with water and everything to do with contact.

What Actually Goes Wrong

The real incidents are boring and preventable a car that wasn’t in neutral fighting the belt, or a charge-port door that popped open. The dramatic ones you read about are mostly folklore.

The battery getting wet is the big myth the pack is already sealed, as covered above, so a wash is nothing to it.

The body panels are no different from a gas car’s, either, so waxing or a ceramic spray afterward is completely safe it’s only the battery that gets the special sealed treatment, not the paint.
